It’s been a mixed bag of a year so far for the most desirable automotive brands, with luxury car deliveries up for several brands in the UK for the year-to-date in May, but sports car deliveries down for several of the major motor makers.
Figures from SMMT show double-digit gains in several marques’ luxury car deliveries, including:
- Bentley (up 19% over YTD figures from May 2018)
- Jaguar (+11%)
- Lexus (+11%)
Other strong performers so far in 2019 include Dacia up nearly 35% and MG up by a whopping 52.5% in terms of new vehicle registrations.
Supercar deliveries less sparkling
Over the same period, sports and supercar deliveries have suffered for several of the leading brands.
Some examples from the latest SMMT new vehicle registrations data include:
- Abarth (down 35% in the UK compared with YTD May 2018)
- Alfa Romeo (-28%)
- DS (-54%)
- Lotus (-29%)
- Maserati (-28%)
- McLaren (-28%)
- Porsche (-26%)
- Subaru (-18%)
Nissan’s luxury car division Infiniti has also seen a slump in sales in the UK, down by a hefty 64% over the previous year.
Flat sales overall
It’s interesting to note how close many of those figures are – Alfa, Lotus, Maserati, McLaren and Porsche all within 3% of each other – and that overall, new vehicle registrations were down by just 3% for YTD May 2019.
New vehicle registrations for business use were down especially sharply, by 40% year-on-year, whereas private car registrations dropped by less than 3% and fleet sales were almost flat.
This suggests that although there are pockets of poor performance, overall the market for new vehicles – including luxury car deliveries from several top brands – remains close to its level from 2018.
